Annie Oakley
Annie Oakley, an American sharpshooter, is recognized as the first female icon of the country. She challenged the male-dominated shooting sport and won against renowned marksman Frank E. Butler, whom she later married. Oakley’s skills drew the attention of prominent figures, including German Kaiser Wilhelm II and British Queen Victoria, who were among her guests.
Her life story has been portrayed in many plays, films, and TV shows, but the most well-known adaptations are the film and stage versions of “Annie Get Your Gun.” She believed in female self-defense, so she inspired and helped numerous women to learn how to shoot.
