You’ve been taught about the Vietnam War in school, for sure. But we bet none of your textbooks mentioned the My Lai massacre. Committed by American troops in 1968, the murder of over 500 Vietnamese civilians was deliberately kept secret for years before being uncovered.
The revelation of the horrific act did lead to good things, though. It caused morale among American G.I.s in Vietnam to plummet even further as more of them became disillusioned with the war they were trying to win. America ended up withdrawing its troops from Vietnam in 1973.
