Breaking Amish: Rumspringa Tradition
Ever seen the show Breaking Amish? This is where Amish youths are allowed to leave their community to experience life in New York City. After the experience, they have to choose whether they want to stay and leave their Amish roots behind (risking ostracization) or return to their Amish community and resume their lives.
The show plays on the Amish rite of passage called Rumspringa. This is where 16-year-old Amish teenagers get to leave their community to experience and try things forbidden by the Ordnung. After this, they also get to choose whether they want to be baptized Amish or leave the community.
