The Rules Differ By Community
While the Ordnung is a set of rules, the concept as a whole isn’t concrete. These rules can be challenged and changed by following the correct channels. This is why some Amish societies are slightly different from others in terms of what they allow and don’t allow.
The Old Order Amish forbids buttons and zippers, regulates hair length, and doesn’t allow women to get haircuts. But in some communities, these have changed thanks to forward-thinking individuals who questioned the norms with valid judgment. The reason for this flexibility is because the Amish don’t have a fixed church government.
