The Queen Pays Below Living Wage Salaries
Her Majesty is known for her expensive taste in wine and real estate. Paying her staff a living wage? Not so much, it seems. The royal family has been criticized over the years every time they advertise vacant positions for butlers, gardeners, and groomers due to the low pay that comes with the jobs.
In 2016, Buckingham Palace advertised for a gardener to be paid only $16 per hour, $1.89 under the London living wage. Sure, a stint at Buckingham Palace or even just the queen’s stables is a rare opportunity. Still, it doesn’t quite make up for the fact that their staff needs to be well-compensated.
