Accidental History

Through the ages, people have speculated that there must be another icy continent near the south pole. Even the ancient Greeks, who knew about the Arctic, reckoned that there must be an opposite to this northern area that balances out the world.

However, it wasn’t until January of 1820 that Antarctica was discovered by accident when two Russian ships sailed past the continent in search of territories to expand their empire. After that, it still took almost twenty years for us to confirm that it was, in fact, a continent and not just an archipelago of islands.
