Off To Its Doomed Maiden Voyage
The Titanic kicked off its maiden voyage on April 10, 1912. Here, you can see it leaving Southampton to make its trip to New York City. Although this image doesn’t show the crowds of people gathered at the dock, the ship started its journey with fanfare.
Aboard the ship were passengers belonging to the British nobility and those from the lower classes hoping to begin a new life in the US. It was captained by Edward J. Smith, who just left one of Titanic’s sister ships to command the vessel.
