The Danish Girl (2015)
Telling the story of an artist struggling with a gender identity crisis, The Danish Girl follows acclaimed actor Eddie Redmayne as his character undergoes one of the world’s first gender-reassignment surgeries to become transgender. The film is based on the real-life events of Lili Elbe, a Danish painter and transgender woman.
Despite winning an Oscar, the film was the subject of countless protests online on social media due to its controversial subject, which was deemed unsuitable for children. On grounds of moral depravity, the film was banned in India, Qatar, Malaysia, Kuwait, United Arab Emirates, Jordan, Bahrain, and Oman.
